Grand Opening of the 2025 Gumi Asian Athletics Championships on May 27

The 2025 Gumi Asian Athletics Championships, a celebration of Asia's athletics stars, opens on May 27. Held over five days until May 31 at Gumi Civic Stadium, the event brings together around 2,000 participants, including 1,197 athletes from 43 countries, as well as officials, referees, and domestic and international media personnel. Out of the 45 eligible countries, all but North Korea and Brunei are participating surpassing the originally expected 1,200 participants and setting a historic record for the number of countries and athletes involved.

South Korea has sent the largest delegation with 115 athletes, followed by Japan (101), China (93), and India (89). These leading Asian athletics nations are competing fiercely in pursuit of medals.

A total of 45 events are being contested, and with the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo coming up this September, numerous medalists from the 2024 Paris Olympics have joined the competition.

To host this event, Gumi has equipped the Gumi Civic Stadium with world-class athletic infrastructure, obtaining WA (World Athletics) Class 1 certification. Facilities have been upgraded through additional scoreboard installations and replacement of lighting towers with LED systems. Furthermore, the city has invested in urban renewal, including remodeling accommodations and restaurants, repaving major roads, and enhancing overall city infrastructure.

This marks the first time Gumi is hosting the Asian Athletics Championships, and the third time the event has been held in South Korea after Seoul in 1975 and Incheon in 2005 making it the first in 20 years.

◆ Introduction to Main Venues

△Gumi Civic Stadium=The main stadium for the 2025 Gumi Asian Athletics Championships has a land area of 79,149㎡, a total floor area of 25,390㎡, and a seating capacity of 15,554. It has received Class 1 certification. Class 1 is the highest grade of track certified by World Athletics (WA), allowing it to host all international athletics competitions, including the Olympic Games. The track is constructed using an embossing technique, offering excellent shock absorption and anti-slip properties, providing an optimal environment for athletes.

△Throwing Practice Field=Located at Kumoh Technical High School, this field has a land and floor area of 25,000㎡ and includes facilities such as an operation center and weight training room. It is used for shot put, discus, hammer, and javelin practice.

△Race Walk Venue=Situated in the Daepyeong 6-gil area of Goa-eup, Gumi, this venue is a 1.1 km course (a 1 km route done 10 times back and forth) with a width of 14 meters. It has been officially certified by World Athletics and is located near the Nakdong River Sports Park.

△Air Dome=The Air Dome, installed at the auxiliary stadium of Gumi Civic Stadium, has a total floor area of 13,994㎡ and is being constructed with an investment of 15 billion KRW. It will serve as a year-round specialized training facility for track and field, and during off-season periods, it will be used as a venue for expositions, exhibitions, and other cultural festivals for local businesses and citizens. Completion is scheduled for 2026.

2025 구미 아시아 육상경기 선수권대회 27일 화려한 개막

아시아 육상 별들의 잔치 2025 구미 아시아 육상경기 선수권대회가 27일 개막한다. 31일까지 5일간 구미시민운동장에서 열리는 대회에는 43개국 선수단 1천197명을 포함해 임원, 심판, 국내외 언론 관계자 등 2천여 명이 참가한다. 참가 대상 45개국 중 북한과 브루나이를 제외한 모든 국가, 애초 예상 인원 1천200명을 뛰어넘는 역사상 최다 국가 및 인원이다.

대한민국 선수단은 115명이 출전해 참가국 중 최다 인원을 기록했으며 일본 101명, 중국 93명, 인도 89명 등 아시아육상 강국들이 대규모 선수단을 파견해 메달을 향한 치열한 경쟁을 펼친다.

경기종목은 총 45개로 오는 9월 도쿄에서 열리는 세계육상선수권을 앞두고 파리 올림픽 메달리스트들이 대거 출전했다.

구미시는 이번 대회를 위해 시민운동장에 WA Class 1 인증을 획득한 최고 수준의 경기 인프라를 구축했다. 전광판 추가 설치, 조명탑 LED 교체 등 체육시설을 정비하고, 숙박업소와 음식점 리모델링, 주요 도로 재포장 등 도시 전반의 환경 개선에도 힘을 쏟았다.

이번 대회는 서울(1975년), 인천(2005년)에 이어 국내에서는 20년 만에 기초지자체로는 구미에서 처음 열리는 아시아육상선수권대회다.

◆주요 경기장 소개

△구미시민운동장=대지면적 7만9천149㎡, 연 면적 2만5천390㎡, 수용인원은 1만5천554석이다. 2025 구미 아시아 육상경기선수권대회 주 경기장으로 Class-1 인증을 받았다. Class-1 인증은 세계육상연맹(WA) 인증을 받은 국제 육상경기대회와 올림픽 육상 종목 등 모든 육상경기가 가능한 최고 등급의 트랙이다. 엠보스 공법으로 제작된 트랙은 탁월한 충격 흡수와 미끄럼 방지 기능을 갖춘 최상의 환경을 제공한다.

△투척연습장=금오공업고등학교에 있는 투척연습장은 대지면적 및 연 면적 2만5천㎡에 부대시설로는 운영본부와 웨이트장 등이 있다. 포환, 원반, 해머, 창 투척연습장으로 활용된다.

△경보경기장=구미시 고아읍 대평6길 일대 경보경기장은 1.1km(1km 왕복 10회)로 너비는 14m다. 세계육상연맹 경기코스로 공인받았으며 주변에는 낙동강 체육공원이 있다.

△에어돔=구미시민운동장 보조경기장을 활용한 에어돔은 연 면적 1만3천994㎡ 규모로 150억 원을 들여 사계절 전천후 육상전지훈련 특화시설과 훈련 시즌 외에는 박람회, 전시회 개최 등 기업체와 시민의 문화 축제의 장으로 활용될 예정이다. 2026년 완공 예정이다.
