"It was nice to meet you. Have a safe trip home! The 2025 Asian Athletics Championships marks a new starting point for Gumi City as it moves toward the world. I am truly pleased that the Gumi Asian Athletics Championships, held over five days starting on the 27th, has come to a successful finish. Above all, I'm delighted that the athletes were able to perform at their best and have a joyful time without any major injuries. I feel proud that we were able to conclude the event successfully under the attention of 4.6 billion Asians."
We spoke with Mayor Kim Jang-ho of Gumi, who successfully concluded the Asian Athletics Championships, to hear about the preparations, outcomes, and future plans.
Q. We've heard that many people contributed to making this event happen.
"Indeed, many people lent their support. I deeply thank Dahlan Jumaan al-Hamad, President of the Asian Athletics Association; Ryu Seung-min, President of the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee; Yuk Hyun-pyo, President of the Korea Association of Athletics Federations; Director Hwang Young-jo, who served as our ambassador; all the sponsoring companies, volunteers, and athlete teams. I am also sincerely grateful to Governor Lee Cheol-woo of North Gyeongsang Province, National Assembly Members Koo Ja-geun and Kang Myung-goo, Chairman Park Gyo-sang of the Gumi City Council, and all 410,000 citizens of Gumi for their great support."
Q. What was the most memorable aspect of preparing for this event?
"Though we faced many twists and turns, I was reminded once again that 'hard work never betrays'. It was only possible thanks to the interest, consideration, and encouragement of our 410,000 citizens. The experience of hosting an international competition will become the foundation for Gumi's new challenges and growth. Over the past few years, Gumi has steadily developed as a powerhouse in sports. We now have the nation's first AI broadcasting baseball stadium established by a local government, the largest number of golf courses in North Gyeongsang Province, and an all-season athletics training air dome. The main stadium for the event, Gumi Citizens' Stadium, was upgraded with a Class-1 certified track and a new electronic scoreboard, earning high praise from the AA competition inspection team."
Q. We heard that a lot of effort also went into the operational side of the event.
"That's right. We dispatched a delegation to the 2023 Bangkok Asian Athletics Championships to thoroughly learn the know-how of organizing international events. For domestic and foreign visitors, we repaired restaurant restrooms, remodeled lodging facilities, created multilingual menus, and renovated roads and signs. We also worked to elevate Gumi's image as a high-quality city. From the moment we secured the bid until the end, we worked closely with the local community. A lot of the citizens participated as supporters, showcasing the enthusiastic support of the people of Gumi. We actively engaged in diplomatic outreach by visiting various embassies to extend invitations and request cooperation, which led to ambassadors and consuls from Asian countries visiting Gumi to show their support."
Q. What is the most important message Gumi delivered through this event?
"Our goal went beyond just holding an international sports competition we aimed to create a platform for cultural and economic exchange in Asia. During the event, we hosted various programs such as the 'Sweet Romantic Night Market', 'Asian Food Festival', and 'Music Festival', giving athletes and spectators from home and abroad the opportunity to experience Korean and Gumi culture. This also provided a great boost to the local commercial district. Most importantly, it served as a signal flare announcing a new beginning for Gumi. Moving forward, we plan to host even larger international events that will raise Gumi's status on the global stage. Together with our 410,000 citizens, we will run toward a new future. Gumi's challenge is just beginning. We ask for your continued interest and support as Gumi takes its next leap forward."

"반가웠습니다! 안녕히 가십시오! 2025 아시아육상경기선수권대회는 세계를 향한 구미시의 새로운 출발점이나 다름없습니다. 지난 27일부터 5일간 열린 구미아시아육상경기선수권대회가 성황리에 마무리되는 것을 매우 기쁘게 생각합니다. 무엇보다 큰 부상 없이 선수들이 최고의 기량을 발휘해 행복한 시간을 보낸 것 같아 흐뭇합니다. 46억 아시아인의 관심 속에서 성공적으로 대회를 마무리한 것에 자부심을 느낍니다." 구미아시아육상경기선수권대회를 성공적으로 마무리한 김장호 구미시장을 만나 대회 준비 과정, 성과, 향후 계획을 들어봤다.
Q. 이번 대회를 성공에 많은 분들의 도움이 있었다고 들었습니다?.
"정말 많은 분들이 힘을 보태주셨습니다. 달란주만 알하마드 아시아육상연맹 회장님, 유승민 대한체육회장님, 육현표 대한육상연맹 회장님, 홍보대사 황영조 감독님을 비롯해 후원기업, 자원봉사자, 선수단 여러분 모두에게 깊이 감사드립니다. 구미시에 큰 힘이 되어주신 이철우 경북도지사님, 구자근·강명구 국회의원님, 박교상 구미시의회 의장님, 그리고 41만 구미시민 여러분께도 진심으로 고개 숙여 감사드립니다."
Q. 이번 대회를 준비하면서 가장 인상 깊었던 점은 무엇이었나요?
"수많은 우여곡절이 있었으나 '열심히 준비한 노력은 결코 배신하지 않는다'라는 믿음을 다시 한 번 깨달았습니다. 41만 시민들의 관심, 배려, 격려가 있었기에 가능했습니다. 국제대회 경험은 앞으로 구미의 새로운 도전과 성장의 밑거름이 될 것입니다. 지난 수년간 구미는 스포츠 강소도시로 꾸준히 성장해 왔습니다. 전국 지자체 최초의 AI 중계 야구장, 경북도내 최다 홀수를 자랑하는 파크골프장, 사계절 이용 가능한 육상 전지훈련장 에어돔을 두루 갖췄습니다. 대회 주경기장인 구미시민운동장은 Class-1 등급 육상트랙으로 교체하고 최신 전광판을 설치해 AA대회 준비 실사단으로부터 극찬을 받았습니다."
Q. 대회 운영 측면에서도 많은 노력을 기울였다고 들었습니다.
"그렇습니다. 2023년 방콕 아시아육상선수권대회에 대표단을 파견해 국제대회 운영 노하우를 철저히 학습했고, 국내외 관광객들을 위해 음식점 화장실 보수, 숙박업소 리모델링, 외국어 메뉴판 제작, 도로 및 간판 정비까지 다양한 지원을 했습니다. 명품도시로서 구미의 이미지를 높이기 위한 노력도 함께했습니다. 대회 유치부터 마무리까지 지역사회와 철저히 협력했습니다. 많은 시민이 서포터즈로 참여해 구미시민의 뜨거운 응원을 보여줬습니다. 각국 대사관을 직접 찾아가 초청과 협조를 구하는 적극적인 외교 활동으로 아시아 각국 대사와 총영사가 구미를 찾아 응원해주셨습니다."
Q. 이번 대회를 통해 구미가 던진 가장 큰 메시지는 무엇인가요?
"단순한 국제스포츠대회를 넘어서 아시아 문화와 경제 교류의 장을 만들고자 했습니다. 대회 기간 동안 '달달한 낭만야시장', '아시안푸드페스티벌', '음악축제' 같은 다채로운 이벤트를 열어 국내외 참가선수와 관람객에게 대한민국과 구미의 문화를 체험할 기회를 제공했습니다. 이는 구미지역 상권에도 활력을 불어넣는 좋은 계기가 됐습니다. 마지막으로 구미의 새로운 시작을 알리는 신호탄이었습니다. 이제 세계인이 주목하는 큼직한 국제대회를 유치해 구미의 위상을 높일 계획입니다. 41만 시민과 함께 새로운 미래를 향해 달려가겠습니다. 구미의 도전은 이제 시작입니다. 새로운 도약과 미래를 향해 달려갈 구미에 많은 관심과 응원을 부탁드립니다."
