"The slogan 'The Dream of Asia, From Gumi to the World' represents Gumi's past, present, and future. Gumi is a city where beautiful natural environments such as Mount Geumo and the Nakdong River coexist harmoniously with industry, culture, and tradition. The saying, 'Half of Joseon's talents come from Yeongnam, and half of Yeongnam's talents come from Seonsan (present-day Gumi),' reflects the city's legacy of producing numerous talented individuals. Former President Park Chung-hee, selected by Time Magazine as one of the '20 Most Influential Asians of the 20th Century,' is also from Gumi. The Saemaul Undong (New Village Movement) that he led helped Korea, devastated by the Korean War, grow into the world's sixth-largest exporter through the spirit of 'diligence, self-help, and cooperation.' Gumi, having upheld the Saemaul spirit for 42 years, proudly serves as the origin city of this global movement."
Q. How does Gumi balance industry and culture
"Gumi is considered Korea's leading industrial city and is home to the country's very first national industrial complex. Today, over 3,700 companies operate here with the goal of global outreach. Starting with textiles and electronics, Gumi has expanded into semiconductors, defense, secondary batteries, and robotics, playing a key role in Korea's economic growth. Moving forward, Gumi will continue to serve as a driving force in industrial development and remain a core economic hub of Korea. Today, Gumi is transforming into a 'hip industrial city' and a 'city of culture and art'. It also has grown into a city that attracts people from all over the country in search of job opportunities. Global festivals like the 'Romantic Night Market' and 'Food Festival' have captured the attention of tourists. The 'Gumi Ramyeon Festival', which uses 'Shin Ramyeon' over 70% of which is produced in Gumi created the world's longest ramen restaurant. Fried ramyeon and gourmet ramyeon dishes continue to captivate palates every year."
Q. What natural landmarks and traditional cultural attractions in Gumi would you recommend
"Gumi, where Korea's tranquil traditions and natural beauty are alive and well, is home to many hidden gems. I recommend visiting Dori Temple the first temple established during the Silla Dynasty; Mount Geumo which surrounds the city like a folding screen; the Nakdong River Sports Park and campgrounds built along the riverside; and the Jisan Saetgang Ecological Park a popular dating spot. Gumi is a unique city that offers healing and adventure, where nature and industrial culture coexist in harmony. Geumosan Provincial Park is particularly notable for its distinctive mountain terrain. Beneath the 976-meter-high peak, which forms a basin, sheer cliffs surround the area like a folding screen. The summit, with its steep and dramatic slopes, features well-known sunrise spots like Hyeonwol Peak and Yaksa Peak. Below the striking rock faces lies Yaksa Temple, believed to have been founded during the Silla period the view from here is so beautiful it is said to resemble a paradise."
Q. We've heard that many people contributed to making this event happen.
"Many people supported the preparations for the Gumi Asian Athletics Championships, which is the first of its kind to be hosted by a local government in Korea. I would like to express my deep gratitude to Dahlan Jumaan al-Hamad, President of the Asian Athletics Association; Ryu Seung-min, President of the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee; Yuk Hyun-pyo, President of the Korea Association of Athletics Federations; Lee Cheol-woo, Governor of North Gyeongsang Province, who also supported wildfire recovery and aid for disaster victims; Members of the National Assembly Koo Ja-geun and Kang Myung-goo; and to all 410,000 citizens of Gumi. Over the two years we spent preparing for this event, we faced many challenges. However, with the belief that 'if you don't give up and knock on the door with sincerity and effort, a way will surely open', we persisted and successfully secured the hosting rights. Lastly, I firmly believe that the challenges taken on by the athletes will become a shortcut not only to Asia's dreams but to the world as well. I sincerely hope all athletes will fully demonstrate the skills they have honed over the years. "첨단산업과 낭만이 어우러진 구미시에 오신 것을 진심으로 환영합니다. 아시아 선수들의 도전과 열정이 넘치는 2025 구미아시아육상경기선수권대회를 구미에서 열게 돼 매우 영광스럽게 생각합니다. 오늘부터 5일간 열리는 대회는 아시아 43개국, 1천200여 명의 선수단이 참가해 46억 아시아인의 관심을 받고 있습니다. 구미시는 선수단과 관람객이 불편을 느끼지 않도록 철저한 준비를 마쳤습니다. 짧은 기간이나마 구미의 매력을 마음껏 느끼면서 구미에 흠뻑 빠지시길 바랍니다."
Q. 이번 대회 슬로건의 의미는?
"'아시아의 꿈, 구미에서 세계로'라는 슬로건은 구미시가 걸어온 과거, 현재, 미래를 표현했습니다. 구미는 금오산과 낙동강이 어우러진 수려한 자연환경과 산업, 문화, 전통이 조화를 이룬 도시입니다. '조선 인재의 반은 영남에서, 영남 인재의 반은 선산(구미)에서 난다'라는 속담이 생길 정도로 수많은 인재를 배출한 고장입니다. 미국 타임지가 선정한 '20세기 가장 영향력 있는 아시아인 20인' 포함된 박정희 전 대통령도 구미 출신입니다. 그분께서 주도한 새마을운동은 '근면·자조·협동' 정신을 바탕으로 한국전쟁으로 빈곤에 빠진 대한민국을 세계 6위 수출국으로 성장시켰습니다. 구미는 새마을운동을 42년간 이어오면서 세계로 확산시키는 자랑스러운 새마을 종주 도시입니다."
Q. 산업과 문화가 공존하는 구미시
"대한민국 경제 1번지로 손꼽히는 구미는 제1호 국가산업단지가 조성된 도시입니다. 현재 3천700여 개 기업이 세계화를 목표로 생산 활동을 하고 있습니다. 섬유·전자산업을 시작으로 반도체, 방산, 2차전지, 로봇산업까지 영역을 확장해 대한민국 경제성장의 거대한 축을 담당하고 있습니다. 향후 구미는 대한민국 산업발전의 견인차이자 경제적 중심지로 역할을 톡톡하게 할 것입니다. 구미는 이제 '힙(Hip)한 산업도시, 낭만이 흐르는 문화예술 도시'로 새롭게 탈바꿈하고 있습니다. 전국 각지에서 일자리를 찾아온 수많은 사람이 모여드는 도시로 성장하고 있습니다. "구미에는 대한민국의 고즈넉한 전통과 자연이 살아 숨 쉬는 관광명소가 곳곳에 숨어 있습니다. 신라시대 최초의 사찰인 '도리사', 도시를 병풍처럼 감싸는 '금오산', 강변을 따라 조성된 '낙동강 체육공원과 캠핑장', 데이트 명소로 인기몰이 중인 '지산샛강생태공원'을 추천합니다. 산업문화 속에서도 자연과 조화를 이루는 삶을 지향하는 힐링과 모험을 즐길 수 있는 특별한 도시로도 손색이 없습니다. 도립공원 금오산은 독특한 산세를 자랑합니다. 분지를 이룬 해발 976m 정상 아래는 칼날 같은 절벽이 병풍처럼 둘러 있고, 가파른 산세가 자랑거리인 정상에는 일출의 명소로 손꼽히는 현월봉, 약사봉이 있습니다. 기암절벽 아래 신라시대에 창건했다고 알려진 약사암에서 바라본 풍경은 선경(仙境)이라고 할 정도로 아름답습니다."
Q. 이번 대회에 도움주신 분들이 많았다고 들었습니다.
"대한민국 기초지자체 최초로 구미에서 개최하는 구미아시아육상경기선수권대회를 준비하는 과정에서 많은 분의 도움이 있었습니다. 달란 주만 알 하마드 아시아육상연맹 회장님, 유승민 대한체육회장님, 육현표 대한육상연맹 회장님, 그리고 산불 복구와 이재민 지원에도 애써주신 이철우 경북도지사님, 구자근·강명구 국회의원님, 그리고 41만 구미시민 여러분께 깊은 감사를 드립니다. 구미시는 2년간 대회를 준비하며 여러 난관을 겪었습니다. 하지만 '포기하지 않고 절실함과 노력으로 문을 두드리면 반드시 길은 열린다'라는 믿음 하나로 도전해 유치에 성공했습니다. 마지막으로 선수 여러분의 도전은 아시아의 꿈을 넘어 세계로 나아갈 지름길이 된다고 확신합니다. 그동안 갈고닦은 기량을 마음껏 발휘하시길 진심으로 기원합니다. 구미를 방문하신 선수와 임원께서는 잊지 못할 소중한 추억을 가슴으로 안고 돌아가시길 바랍니다. 고맙습니다. 사랑합니다."
