Kim Cheol-gwang, President of the Gumi City Athletics Federation, said he still cannot forget the day the host city for the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships was announced. At that time, Gumi, a city of 400,000 people, succeeded in winning the bid over Xiamen, China, a city of five million.
The Gumi City delegation, composed of nine members including President Kim, Mayor Kim Jang-ho of Gumi, and representatives from the Korea Association of Athletics Federations, flew directly to Bali, Indonesia, where the board meeting was held, to carry out hosting activities and deliver a presentation.
China had a board member with voting rights, and Xiamen, being a special economic zone, boasted infrastructure such as an area three times the size of Seoul, an international airport within the city, over 30 five-star hotels, and a newly constructed stadium nearing completion all backed by powerful administrative support from the central government. At the time, the hosting competition between Gumi and Xiamen was referred to as a "David vs. Goliath" battle, highlighting the challenging situation for Gumi's bid.
President Kim explained, "Gumi emphasized its concentrated sports facilities, excellent accessibility, and its ability to respond during the COVID-19 pandemic, prioritizing safety and trust as the core values of the event, and poured all efforts into the hosting bid."
The delegation, including President Kim and Mayor Kim Jang-ho, met each member of the Asian Athletics Association Board individually, strongly expressing their will to host and sharing a vision of joint prosperity and development in Asia.
We spoke with Kim Cheol-gwang, President of the Gumi City Athletics Federation, who played a major role in overcoming numerous difficulties and successfully winning the bid.
Q. What was the process of securing the event like?
"It was Gumi's passion for hosting the event that ultimately moved even the heavens. While not only North Gyeongsang Province but also major cities in Korea entered the bidding competition, Gumi's infrastructure, accessibility, and above all its passion for hosting were unmatched by any other city. After Gumi was selected as the representative city for Korea, that passion and unity grew even stronger. In Bali, where the board meeting to decide the host city was held, the Gumi delegation did their utmost to promote the city, even skipping meals whenever there was even the slightest opportunity to raise its profile."
Q. How was the city preparing for the event?
"This event is not just for the athletes it's an event where all citizens are the main players. It is a festival created together by athletes, volunteers, local students, cheering squads, and many others. Various citizen participation programs are being held across Gumi, such as creating cheering banners, athletics experience programs, and youth athletics camps. Multicultural families in the North Gyeongsang region are also expected to actively participate in supporting the event. I sincerely thank the people of North Gyeongsang Province and the citizens of Gumi for their great interest, effort, and dedication. Through this event, we will widely promote Gumi's potential and beauty not only across Asia but also around the world. We kindly ask for your continued support throughout the remainder of the event."
Q. What is the most important factor for the success of the event?
"The event has already begun. Gumi hosting an international athletics competition is not simply a sporting event it's a major leap for the city's branding and the advancement of regional sports. Therefore, it's important that the athletes participating in the event take away many good memories and experiences of Gumi. To achieve this, improving civic awareness is crucial. Restaurants, accommodations, and everyday citizens must all warmly welcome visitors to Gumi, so that the city becomes a place they want to return to. City competitiveness lies in how well we treat our guests. We should welcome those who come to Gumi with kindness and a warm attitude, so that they truly feel they are being warmly welcomed. I believe the dignity of Gumi ultimately comes from the attitude of its citizens."
Q. What does the future hold for athletics in Gumi?

"The future of athletics in Gumi is bright. Through this event, we plan to establish long-term development plans including revitalizing youth athletics, enhancing training systems, and expanding international exchanges. We will also join forces across government, education, and the sports community to broaden the foundation of athletics in Gumi so that the city can become a hub of international athletics in the future. It's been nearly ten years since I became President of the Gumi City Athletics Federation in 2016. Honestly, I had considered stepping down earlier, but I could not leave after successfully securing the international event.
I will consider the remainder of my term as my final chapter and sincerely devote myself to serving for the future of athletics in Gumi. The Gumi City Athletics Federation also conveys the event's spirit of compassion through various outreach activities, such as donating to athletes affected by the earthquake in Myanmar and providing aid to regions impacted by wildfires." "대회 유치 향한 구미시 열정 하늘도 감동했어요"
■ 김철광 구미시육상연맹 회장 인터뷰
"2022년 12월 14일 인도네시아 발리에서 열린 아시아육상연맹 이사회에서 '구미'라는 이름이 나오자 누가 먼저라고 할 것도 없이 서로 부둥켜안고 눈물을 흘렸습니다."
김철광 구미시육상연맹 회장은 지금도 2025년 아시아육상경기선수권대회 개최지 발표를 한 그날의 감동을 잊을 수 없다고 말했다. 당시 인구 40만 구미시는 500만의 중국 샤먼시를 이기고 대회 유치에 성공했다.
김 회장을 비롯해 김장호 구미시장과 대한육상연맹 등 9명으로 구성된 구미시 대표단은 이사회가 열린 인도네시아 발리로 직접 날아가 대회 유치 활동과 프레젠테이션을 진행했다.
중국은 이사회 내 투표권이 있는 위원이 있었으며 경제특구도시인 샤먼시는 서울시 3배 면적, 지역 내 국제공항과 30여개의 5성급 호텔, 완공을 앞둔 신설 경기장 등 풍부한 인프라와 중앙정부의 막강한 행정지원을 등에 업고 있었다. 당시 구미와 샤먼의 유치경쟁은 '다윗과 골리앗의 싸움'으로 불릴 만큼 구미시의 대회 유치는 쉽지 않은 상황이었다.
김 회장은 "구미시는 집약된 경기시설과 뛰어난 접근성, 코로나 팬데믹 상황시 대응능력을 강점으로, 안전과 신뢰를 대회의 최우선 가치로 내세우며 유치에 총력을 다했다"고 설명했다.
김 회장과 김장호 구미시장 등 대표단은 아시아육상연맹 이사회 위원을 한 명 한 명 만나 강력한 유치 의지를 설명하고 아시아 공동 번영과 발전 비전을 공유했다.
숱한 어려움을 이겨내고 대회 유치에 큰 역할을 한 김철광 구미시육상연맹 회장을 만나 이야기를 들었다.
Q. 대회 유치 과정은
"대회 유치를 향한 구미의 열정에 결국 하늘도 감동한 것입니다. 경북은 물론 국내 대도시까지 유치 경쟁에 뛰어들었지만, 구미만의 인프라, 접근성, 무엇보다 유치 열정은 그 어떤 도시보다도 남달랐습니다. 우리나라 대표 도시로 결정된 이후에는 그 열정과 단결력이 더 강해졌습니다. 유치 도시를 결정하는 이사회가 열린 발리에서 구미 대표단은 구미를 알릴 기회가 조금이라도 있으면 식사도 거르고 달려갈 정도로 최선을 다했습니다."
Q. 대회 준비는
"이번 대회는 선수뿐 아니라 시민 모두가 주인공입니다. 선수와 자원봉사자, 지역 학생들, 응원단 등 많은 분이 함께 만들어가는 축제입니다. 구미시 곳곳에서 응원 현수막과 육상 체험 프로그램, 청소년 육상 캠프 등 다양한 시민 참여 프로그램이 진행됩니다. 경북 지역 다문화가정도 적극적으로 응원에 참여할 예정입니다. 경북도민과 구미시민의 큰 관심과 노력, 정성에 감사드립니다. 이번 대회를 계기로 구미의 저력과 아름다움을 아시아는 물론 전 세계에 널리 알리겠습니다. 남은 기간 많은 응원 부탁드립니다."
Q. 대회 성공을 위해 가장 필요한 부분은
"대회가 시작됐습니다. 구미가 국제육상대회를 유치한 것은 단순히 스포츠 행사가 아니라 도시 브랜드와 지역 체육의 큰 도약인 만큼 대회 참가 선수들이 구미에 대한 좋은 기억과 추억을 많이 쌓아가도록 해야 합니다. 이를 위해서는 시민의식 향상이 중요합니다. 식당과 숙소는 물론 일반 시민 모두 구미를 찾아오는 손님을 친절히 맞아 다시 찾고 싶은 구미를 만드는 것이 바로 도시 경쟁력입니다. 구미를 찾은 손님을 손님답게 대하는 친절 마인드와 태도로 구미에 가니 우리를 정말 환영한다고 느끼게 해주어야 합니다. 구미의 품격은 바로 시민의 태도에서 나온다고 생각합니다."
Q. 구미 육상의 미래는
"구미 육상의 미래는 밝습니다. 이번 대회를 계기로 유소년 육상 활성화, 훈련시스템 고도화, 국제교류 확대 등의 중장기 발전계획을 세울 계획입니다. 또 구미가 향후 국제육상 메카로 자리 잡을 수 있도록 행정, 교육계, 체육계 다같이 힘을 모아 구미 육상의 저변을 넓히겠습니다. 2016년부터 시작된 구미시육상연맹 회장 자리가 어느덧 10년이 다 되어갑니다. 사실 그 전에 그만두려 했지만 국제대회를 유치하면서 그만둘 수 없었습니다. 남은 임기를 마지막이라고 생각하고 구미육상 미래를 위해, 진심으로 열심히 봉사하겠습니다. 구미시육상연맹은 미얀마 지진 피해 선수단을 위한 기부와 산불 피해 지역 성금 전달 등 폭넓은 활동으로 대회의 '따뜻한 의미'도 함께 전하고 있습니다." 박용기기자 ygpark@yeongnam.com
