Fierce Competition Among 1197 Athletes for Victory in 45 Events

total of 1,197 athletes from 43 countries are participating in the 2025 Gumi Asian Athletics Championships, which opened on May 27. Including officials, referees, and both domestic and international media personnel, approximately 2,000 people have visited Gumi for the event.

South Korea has the largest delegation with 115 athletes, followed by Japan with 101, China with 93, India with 89, Taiwan with 81, Hong Kong with 58, Uzbekistan with 56, Saudi Arabia with 54, Kazakhstan with 52, Malaysia with 51, and Thailand with 46, among others.

The competition features a total of 45 events:

100m (Men/Women), 200 m (Men/Women), 400m (Men/Women), 800 m (Men/Women), 1500m (Men/Women), 5000m (Men/Women), 10,000m (Men/Women), 3000m Steeplechase (Men/Women), 100m Hurdles (Women), 110m Hurdles (Men), 400m Hurdles (Men/Women), High Jump (Men/Women), Pole Vault (Men/Women), Long Jump (Men/Women), Triple Jump (Men/Women), Shot Put (Men/Women), Discus Throw (Men/Women), Hammer Throw (Men/Women), Javelin Throw (Men/Women), Heptathlon (Women), Decathlon (Men), 20 km Race Walk (Men/Women), 4x100 m Relay (Men/Women), 4x400 m Relay (Men/Women), and 4x400 m Mixed Relay.

The highly anticipated high jump showdown between Korea's Woo Sang-hyeok and Qatar's Mutaz Barshim ultimately fell through.

The matchup between the Korean record holder and the Tokyo Olympic gold medalist had drawn great attention, but just before the competition began, Barshim announced his withdrawal.

Recently, Woo Sang-hyeok has been showing strong performance, recording 2.30 meters at the national team trials, raising hopes for a new record.

Other notable international stars competing in Gumi include China's shot put athletes Song Jiayuan and Feng Bin, and Pakistan's javelin ace Arshad Nadeem. Among the Korean athletes, rising sprint star Joel Jin Nwamadi, local Gumi City Hall team members Son Kyung-mi, Joo Seung-kyun, and Lee Sang-guk(leader), and the so-called 'High School Thor' Park Si-hoon of Gumi Geumo High School have drawn attention. 1197명 선수, 45개 종목 우승 향해 뜨거운 경쟁

27일 개막한 2025 구미 아시아 육상경기선수권 대회에는 43개국, 1천197명의 선수가 참가했다. 임원, 심판, 국내외 언론 관계자 등을 포함하면 2천여 명이 대회를 위해 구미를 방문했다.

우리나라 선수단이 115명으로 가장 많고 일본 101명, 중국 93명, 인도 89명, 대만 81명, 홍콩 58명, 우즈베키스탄 56명, 사우디아라비아 54명, 카자흐스탄 52명, 말레이시아 51명, 태국 46명 등이다.

경기종목은 총 45개로 100m(남/여), 200m(남/여), 400m(남/여), 800m(남/여), 1500m(남/여), 5000m(남/여), 10000m(남/여), 3000m 장애물 달리기(남/여), 100m 허들(여), 110m 허들(남), 400m 허들(남/여), 높이뛰기(남/여), 장대높이뛰기(남/여), 멀리뛰기(남/여), 세단뛰기(남/여), 포환던지기(남/여), 원반던지기(남/여), 해머던지기(남/여), 창던지기(남/여), 7종 경기(여), 10종 경기(남), 20km 경보(남/여), 4x100m 릴레이(남/여), 4x400m 릴레이(남/여), 4x400m 믹스릴레이 등이 있다.

한국의 우상혁 선수와 카타르 바르심 선수의 높이뛰기 빅매치는 아쉽게 무산됐다.

한국 신기록 보유자와 도쿄올림픽 금메달리스트 격돌로 큰 관심을 모았지만, 대회 시작 직전 바르심 선수가 불참 의사를 전했다.

최근 우상혁 선수는 국가대표 선발전에서 2m 30cm를 기록하는 등 상승세를 타고 있어 새로운 신기록 달성에 기대를 모으고 있다.

이 외에도 중국의 포환던지기 스타 송지아위안과 펑빈, 파키스탄의 창던지기 강자 아르샤드 등 각 종목 세계적 스타들이 대회에 참가해 구미를 찾았다. 국내 선수단 중에서는 단거리 유망주 나마디 조엘진, 구미시청 소속 손경미·주승균·이상국(지도자), 구미 금오고 소속 '고교생 토르' 박시훈 선수의 성적도 관심사다. 특히 조하림 선수는 육상 여자 3천ｍ 장애물 선발전에서 마의 10분 벽을 넘은 9분59초05에 결승선을 통과하며 한국 신기록을 세웠다. 박용기기자 ygpark@yeongnam.com
